living off the grid

I mean not just the power grid, but the economic one too. How practical would it really be. I'm approaching 59 1/2, and have been thinking about retrieving my 401k monies and queitly enjoying the rest of my life. And I rather not pay any more taxes, income or consumptive.
Is this just a dream?
Is any one 'doing it' now?

QWAK,Mtscout, I'm not shure that wile living inside the USA that is posable any more and perhaps best not to even try. My perspective is to cut it to the mininum and as low as posable yet still use the system or at least the good parts, just avoid being totaly DEPENDENT on it.

One should not "Throw out the BABY with the BATH WATER" so to speak.:albertein Triping over BABIES is a HAZARD! :hahaha: It also tends to draw UNWANTED attention should an emergency happen and the system get drawn in wether you want it or not.

I believe that at least for me,what works best is to maintain as low a profile as posable sort of being INVISABLE in the crowd and staying out of crowds as much as posable. No need to prove any thing to any one just do MY THING quietly in the back ground and SHARE what I have learned with others who that may help once I find they are like minded or at least on the same page. Plus I get lots of usefull information in return so it is mutualy benificial on all sides.

One MUST render un to CEASER or CEASER will take EVERY THING you OWN!:albertein :afraid:

Re: living off the grid

I was looking at a 'cabin' on top of a mountain in WV awhile back. (29 acres) Taxes were only $17/half. I emailed the realestate agent and she confirmed it.

This cabin was just to big for me.....2 story with the ceiling partly open. I'm not even sure if the woodstove would have been able to heat it. Plus the flue went up about 7' and then they had a 90 through the wall and another 90 to continue straight up outside. It would have been a real pain to clean that flue. They also had oil or elect heat ..can't remember which. I remember the elect. was under ground.

They had a fairly long winding dirt/gravel road to the 'top', from the main road. With a strong gate, well locked down by the road, I figured I could just dissapear up there.

A diesel generator came with the house. The cabin was only 2 years old. Looked pretty nice. They started at $125,000 and dropped it to $110,000. I thought long and hard about it but decided against it. Just to much house for me.

thanks for your thoughts, and I agree. I don't believe it's really possible to be 'off the grid", in to-day's world. Maintaining a low profile is about as good as anyone could do.

your description of the 29 acre property, sounds like my home.
